About This Project

Longwood Gardens

Kennett Square, PA
Stuart-Lynn Company worked with Lord Cultural Resources on The Visionary Plan, the first ever, Master Plan for the extensive, historic Longwood Gardens campus. The campus includes historic houses, educational facilities, administrative spaces, gardens, greenhouses and conservatories for both storage and exhibitions, numerous water features and maintenance facilities, as well as the world’s largest privately owned pipe organ. The project entailed a comprehensive cost report, including optimum work plans to satisfy the growing needs and intended program for this thriving institution. Early cost projections addressed preservation challenges facing the entire campus and all of its 180 structures, as well as future development as outlined by the project management team. The plan provided for historic renovations, several new buildings and major work to upgrade the Main Fountain Garden, several new greenhouses and a potential conveyance system providing transportation throughout the campus. The plan also provided for redesign of the principal entrance to the facility. Current visitor capacity, sometimes as much as 80,000 people per day, overwhelms the existing undersized entrance portal, causing traffic congestion on the adjacent state and interstate highways. The entrance redesign resolved this situation, not only for the campus but for the surrounding access roads as well.
